Stratford Family in Large Reunion

Descendants of George Stratford and Eliza Barwell gather to celebrate the birthday of their last surviving child.

At the Fourth ward chapel and recreation hall the Stratford family held a reunion May 4 in honor of the eighty-second birthday of Annie Stratford Robinson of Farmington, Utah. Annie Robinson was born at Malden, Essex, England, May 4, 1843, and with her family emigrated to America in 1861. George Stratford, father of the family, died on the plains and was buried at Florence, Neb. The rest of the family continued their journey by ox team and on their arrival in Utah settled at Farmington where Mrs. Robinson still resides. She is the last of the original Stratford family that emigrated from England and is the sister of the late Bishop Edwin Stratford of Ogden. Mrs. C.W. Penrose of Salt Lake, Mrs. William Budge of Logan and Mrs. Soren Poulsen of Providence, Cache county. All of the above members of this family have left a large posterity and 175 of these participated in the get-together party.

At 5 o’clock an interesting program was given with the following numbers: Singing “Oh Ye Mountains High” favorite composition of President Penrose, prayer, William Jones; welcome, Frank W. Stratford; vocal solo Jesse R. S. Budge; recitation, Marjorie Stratford; family history, Edwin A. Stratford; piano selection, Helen Budge; reading, Marvel Stratford Schaar; vocal solo, Gladys Stratford Watson; talk by President J. H. Robinson of the Davis stake. After the program all adjourned to the hall where a delightful luncheon was served. A feature of the luncheon was the cutting of the three-tier birthday cake made by Eliza Stratford Smith of Logan in honor of Mrs. Robinson. This was distributed to all present as a favor of the evening. This cake was beautifully decorated and 82 candles were placed on it. These candles were lighted.

Dancing was later enjoyed and many added features participated in which brought the family closer together. The following grandchildren of George Stratford were present and welcomed the great number of the family gathered from different parts of Utah, Idaho, Oregon and California: Edwin A. Stratford, Eliza Stratford Smith, Jesse G. Stratford of Pocatello; F. W. Stratford, Egbert C. Stratford and Horace B. Stratford, children of Bishop Edwin Stratford; Ernest Penrose, Jessie Penrose Jones, Kate Penrose Brown and Lucille Penrose Brown, children of Lucetta Stratford Penrose; Julia Budge Nibley, Annie Budge and Jesse R. S. Budge, children of Julia Stratford Budge, and Louis Robinson, Lucy Robinson Coombs and William Robinson, children of Annie Stratford Robinson.
