      December 21, 1947 - September 15, 2015

Cheryl Smiltneek, a long-time resident of Oconomowoc, passed away peacefully early Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Angels Grace Hospice. She is survived by her husband of 42 years Martin Smiltneek, two children, Matt (Debbee) Smiltneek of Salt Lake City, UT, Sarah (Tony) LePage of West Allis, and by Helen Teague of Minneapolis, who she loved as one of her own. ?Grandma C? was deeply and fiercely loved by her four grandchildren, Sam, Sophie, Max and Gabe; the love and care she showed for them will be carried in their hearts forever. She is further survived by her mother, Frances Flegner of Oshkosh, sisters Linda (Andy) Smiltneek of Neenah and Krista (Joe) Seefeld of Cudahy, and brother Steve (Judy) Flegner of Menomonee Falls. She will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by numerous family members, close friends and neighbors.

A woman of knowledge, Cheryl was a constant student of history, anthropology and human development. She quietly conducted her love affair with books while employing a quickness of mind that allowed her to extract their secrets. This woman who practiced magic with knitting needles and crochet hooks, needles and thread, food and little children captured our hearts with her steady hand and deep understanding of the human heart. She could find the perfect toy or book for any occasion, and she made sure to always have a prize ready for visiting children. It was impossible to have a boring conversation with her, no matter the topic. She made it her business to speak the language of the children dear to her, whether that language was spoken in BMX bikes, ballet shoes, horses, even Pokemon, much to the delight of her eldest grandson.

Cheryl had a smile that could light up a room. She flashed it most often when talking about her family, of which she was very proud. She is preceded in death by her father, aunts, uncles, and several cousins.

A private family memorial will be held. In lieu of cards and flowers, the family asks that you donate generously to your favorite charity in her memory.
