"Lebanon Church, Shenandoah, VA, The Evangelical Lutheran Church
Location--Lebanon Church, VA six miles west of Strasburg, VA on State Route 55
Built--1858 Owners--The Lutheran Congregation
Physical Description--This church has been repaired and much of the original structure has been changed. New windows and pews were put in in 1913. It still has the original shutters with stationary slats. There is one large auditorium with two small rooms in the rear - one on each side of the pulpit. It has ten windows and a plain front door with open steps. The windows are of stained glass. The exterior is plain weatherboarding painted white. This church stands on a corner of Cross Roads as it was once called, and is somewhat outstanding in appearance for a country church, being beautiful in its simplicity.
Historical Significance--This church was used for a hospital during the Civil War, and it is said that it took much work to get it cleaned up after the war."

Looking west from U.S. 48/VA55 toward Little North Mountain, Devils Backbone State Forest.
This scene near the border line between Shenandoah and Frederick Counties, VA is typical of valleys between the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. The land would have been covered by forest when Joseph Whittington after 1791 brought his bride, Sarah Russell, to old Frederick County, the Northern Neck of Virginia.
