- In 1066 A. D., William The Conqueror from Normandy, France, invaded England and rallied his men to victory at the battle of Hasting, thus signaling a new era in the history of England. Among his officers that day at Hastings there were at least three members of the House of Vernon from Normandy, France, and at least three members of their parent family, Reviers. No family contributed more to the official ranks of William at Hastings.
William the Conqueror awarded about one fourth of England to his nephew, Earl Hugh Lupus, who became the first Earl of Chester, including the county of Cheshire in the year 1070. Earl Hugh Lupus was age 19 at the Battle of Hastings, 23 at the time he was given Cheshire and 39 at the time of the great survey of the Domesday Book. He held militarily all of greater Cheshire and North Wales. The County of Cheshire became a stronghold of the Normans. Cheshire was the cornerstone defence of William the Conqueror's kingdom, especially against the Welsh and Irish intruders. Earl Hugh Lupus was a palatine Count which made him the virtual king of Cheshire. Hugh Lupus appointed four great Barons, the second of which was Sir Richard De Vernon, Hugh's palatine Baron of Chester, of Castle Vernon, Seigneur de Revier, Baron of Shipbrook, and holder of Castle Shipbrook on the Wever in Cheshire County. The Vernons, including Sir Richard's brother, Walter, who were among William's officers at the Battle of Hastings were from the arrondisement of Evereux in Normandy and were granted vast estates in both Normandy and England. Thus Sir Richard De Vernon held the titles of Seigneur De Revier in Normandy and Baron of Shipbrook in Cheshire. Additionally the Vernons held the traditional ownership of estates in the district of Vernon in Normandy, which had been in the possession of the rising house of Reviers-Vernon since the reign of Duke William Longsword ( The Viking ) since before 1000 A. D. The family of Sir Richard De Vernon, the first Baron of Shipbrook, rose to the top of Cheshire County aristocracy. The principal city of Cheshire County is Chester, which is located less than 50 miles south of Liverpool. Cheshire County is the wellspring for many lines of the Vernon family. The name of Vernon is listed in the Domesday Book as landholders in Cheshire County.
