"Clough Overton & Betsy Poague
Clough Overton's Kentucky home was in Harrodsburg (now in Mercer Co., which was created out of Lincoln Co in 1785). In early 1782, Elizabeth Poague aged 18 was betrothed to a genteel, wealthy young man named Clough Overton. In August of 1782 Overton and others from Harrodsburg went to the defense of Bryan Station which was under siege by 600 Indians from various tribes. Young Overton never returned, being one of the many brave pioneers who fell at the battle of Blue Licks.
Years later, a grandchild of Elizabeth (Poague) Thomas stated that Grandmother comforted herself with a new Lover, but to her last days would weep over the fate of Overton. One of her sons was named Overton Thomas, a name which occurs in the genealogical records of her descendants.
On July 16, 1782, Clough Overton made his will in which he devised some 30,000 acres of land and 55,000 acres of warrants to brothers: John, James, George, William, Tom & Richard & to his sisters Mary, Becky & Sarah and to his father John Overton.
'To Betsy Poague, 500 acres of land lying and being on Lick Branch of the Licking River to her and her heirs forever. I give to the afore mentioned Betsy Poague 400 acres of land lying and being on the waters of Salt River adjoining Isaac Hite on the East Side. (Note: this tract is in Mercer Co., Ky. on present day US 127 north ) Further I give to the afore said Betsy Poage three cows, and my bay horse to her and her heirs forever.'
Her step-father, Col. Joseph Lindsey, was one of the witnesses but he also fell at the Battle of Blue Licks on the same day as Clough Overton. Ann, Elizabeth's mother, was also one of the two witnesses & she proved the will in Lincoln Co on 21 Jan 1783...the will was not recorded as it lacked the oath of the second witnesses James Deacon.
The Overton heirs put up a vicious fight to prevent Betsy Poague (who would marry John Thomas, first surveyor of Mercer Co.) from obtaining title to the two most valuable tracts of land willed by Clough Overton.
In Dec 1805, James Deacon then of Livingston Co., Ky. (under a writ of Mandamus from the Ky. Court of Appeals in 1805) testified as to the will.
Even though the Overton Heirs ultimately failed, the litigation continued until May 1808.
Elizabeth (Poague) Thomas would give an interview now found in the Draper Mss. She was the daughter of William & Ann (Kennedy) Poague."

"Draper Papers 4/cc 85 Statements of Mrs. Elizabeth (Poague) Thomas, Harrodsburg, Mercer County, KY:
I was born in Virginia on the 4th day of September 1764 in Rockbridge County near the Natural Bridge. My father moved on the North Fork of Holston within 4 or 5 miles from Abingdon and remained there two or three years and in March 1775, we moved down the Holston near the Big Island where we remained until Sep 1775, when Colonel Calloway and his company came along going to Kentucky; when my father, William Poague, packed up and came with him with our family, Colonel Boone and with his wife and family and Colonel Hugh McGary, Thomas Denton, and Richard Hogan were on the road before us. When we arrived at Boonesborough the latter part of September, there was only five or six cabins built along the bank of the Kentucky River, but not picketed and being open on two sides. Nat Hart had a cabin above a small branch which headed up near the river hill in a Buffalo lick, some two or three hundred yards distant, and this was its condition when we arrived. We found Boone and Henderson there when we arrived and a number of others to whom Henderson was selling land claims. We remained at Boonesborough that winter in a cabin built by John Kennedy, a brother of General Thomas Kennedy and in the winter the Kentucky river rose from heavy rains and ran around the cabins next the river hill; we were afraid it would have entered our cabin, but it did not. In February 1776 my father and family moved to Harrodsburg into the Fort built by McGary. . . .
Mrs. Thomas was married to Captain John Thomas, June 29, 1785 and he was the next year appointed the first surveyor of Mercer County; they had twelve children; Captain Thomas died 2 Mar 1814 in his 63d year of age. Elizabeth Thomas."
