"Hardy County was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly on December 10, 1785 and organized in February 1786 from parts of Hampshire County. . . . The first federal census in 1790 revealed that Hardy County had the third largest population (7,336) of the nine counties that were then in existence within present-day West Virginia."

"Rev. Owen Thomas was born Gwrogodlly, Cilmanllwyd, Pembroke, Wales in 1692 he died in Chester Co, PA November 12, 1760.
Morris Thomas, the son of Rev. Owen and Eleanor Thomas of Chester County, Pennsylvania, was born in Pennsylvania about 1727. Morris married Mary Cantrell date unknown.
Morris's will was dated September 9, 1795, he died January 13, 1796 in Hardy County, VA. I believe he owned property in Hardy County, VA.
All of Morris and Mary's children were born in Pennsylvania. Morris and Mary had the following children:
Elizabeth; Hannah; Owen; Sarah; Susannah; John, died March 2, 1814 in KY.; Rachel born 1758 in PA, married May 14, 1778 Frederick Co., VA died November 12, 1808 in Mercer Co. KY; Rachel married Robert Denny they moved to Lincoln Co, now Mercer, Kentucky about 1790; Elisha, born September 22, 1762, died October 5, 1856, Mercer Co., KY; David, born May 23, 1767, died January 28, 1852 in Clay County, IN; Oswald, born September 10, 1769, died August 12, 1835 in Shelby County, KY."

"Owen & wife Eleanor both left wills in the 1760's in Chester Co., Penn naming among others these children:
(1) Morris - presumed to be eldest son
(2) Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Thomas. (Who were the parents of this Joseph Thomas? Were they first cousins? What happened to Elizabeth Thomas & Joseph Thomas??)
(3) Son David Thomas. (Which David is he????)
Morris married Mary Cantrell, who was baptized in the Baptist faith just after her marriage:
'Welsh Tract Baptist Meeting, Pencader Hundred, New Castle Co., Delaware:
p. 52 - Mary Cantrell now Thomas was baptized 6 Oct 1744.'
Morris seems to have gotten into a snit with the local Baptist church and moved his family over to what would become Hardy Co., VA.
Most of the children of Morris & Mary (Cantrell) Thomas moved to Mercer Co., KY., where they became influential Kentucky pioneers. The first to move to KY in the 1780's was son John Thomas, b. 1752 in Chester Co., PA & d. 2 Mar 1814 in Mercer Co, KY. He was appointed the first surveyor in the then vast Lincoln Co., KY (his home fell in Mercer when it was cut from Lincoln). His surveyor book has survived - his drawn survey plats and the written calls are absolutely beautiful - showing he had an rigorous and extensive education.
Elizabeth & Rachel Thomas (daughters of Morris & Mary) married Dennys from Chester Co., PA. They also became the guardians of their sister Hannah (Thomas) McAchran Parsons' 4 children & brought them to Mercer Co., KY.
These Mercer Co., KY children of Morris and Mary always considered David Thomas (1732-1816 Jessamine Co., Ky.) who moved with, them to be the younger Brother of their father Morris. . . .
