"North Carolina State Historical Marker, Main Street at Fisher Street, Salisbury, Rowan County, NC:
'Andrew Jackson studied law under Spruce Macay, 1784-1785, at an office which stood one block west. Jackson was admitted to the bar in Rowan County, 6 Nov 1787,'" about the time David Davenport (1787-1833) was born in Rowan County.
"Alone at age fourteen, [following his father's death], Andrew Jackson worked odd jobs, but ultimately decided on law. Studying under prominent Salisbury lawyer Spruce Macay in 1784, he was admitted to the Rowan County bar two years later [at age twenty]. One of his first assignments was magistrate of western North Carolina (now Tennessee), and he subsequently moved to Nashville, where he married Rachel Robards." (Tennessee became a separate state in 1796.)
