Notes |
- "CAHOKIA, Ill. Katie Deal of Columbia, IL, was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. After a lifetime as an excellent homemaker and servant of God, she successfully finished her work on Oct. 24, 2008.
Katie was born to James Ephraim and Leona Carpenter on Dec. 4, 1918. Her father died when she was six days old and her mother married Uncle Henry Carpenter, her father's brother. Together they raised their joined family of four brothers and one girl. Katie is survived by only one of her brothers, Iorval Carpenter of Poplar Bluff, Butler County, Missouri.
In 1937 Katie married her beloved Joe Deal. Until his death in 2003 they shared a great life; working hard, raising five children, being partners. Together they shared the grief of losing their eldest son, Joseph E. Deal. As preacher and preacher's wife, Joe and Katie served God in congregations of the church in Missouri, Arkansas, Virginia and Ghana, West Africa. They are remembered for their love and hard work by many people.
Whatever she did, Katie did to the best of her ability. She had very high standards for housekeeping and she worked hard to maintain them. Her cooking and baking skills are legendary. She shared her cinnamon roll recipe with us, but no one has been able to equal the ones she made. When her children were young, she often worked late at night to sew pretty dresses for her daughters. We appreciate this love and sacrifice more now than we did then. Katie made quilts and afghans for her children and grandchildren. These are treasured keepsakes. Her great joy was in her 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She loved seeing them, hearing about them and looking at their pictures. Katie was a strong woman with courage, tenacity and a strong faith in God. She taught us to work hard, to care for our family and to love God and serve him.
Survivors are children: 1. Shirley Deal (daughter-in-law) of Van Buren, Carter County, MO; 2. Dorothy and Charles Uebelein of Waterloo, Monroe County IL; 3. Dena and James Badgett of Wichita, Sedgewick County, KS; 4. Linda and John Sykes of Columbia, Monroe County, IL; 5. David and Capathia Deal of Columbia, Boone County, Mo.
Grandchildren: Mark (Dianna) Deal, Jeffrey (Viktoria) Deal, Kevin (Laura) Uebelein, Keith (Sherry) Uebelein, Melanie (Achim) Geiler, Benjamin (Glynis) Badgett, Joshua Badgett, Simon Badgett, Walter (Jennifer) Sykes, Eli (Amanda) Deal, Claire (Jeremy) Chapman.
Great-grandchildren: Latisha Young, Natasha Deal, Daniel, Sara and Andrew Uebelein, Caleb, Luke, Rachel and Mary Joy Uebelein, Ryan and Max Geiler, Ariana, Micah and Elijah Badgett, Jenna Sykes and Dexter Chapman."
