    Notes
    • Steam engineer
    • William Sims (1762-1834), was a mining engineer born near Chacewater on 29 December 1762. He became a leading designer of steam engines in Cornwall, where he was agent for Michael Williams of the United Miners and engineer to the Eastern Mines. In 1811 he went to London to to see Arthur Woolf's engine. Around the time Woolf returned to Cornwall, William's son James began working as an assistant to his father. When Woolf left his position at Wheal Unity and Poldice in 1821, William replaced him. Sims took an interest in Trevithick's pole engine patent (No. 3922, 1815) shortly before Trevithick's departure for Peru in 1816 and together they added pole cases to older Boulton and Watt engines at Wheal Chance and Treskerby. Sims alone later compounded three more at United Mines Williams, Wheal Damsel and United Mines Polding, and by the time of the 1817 Parliamentary Inquiry into high pressure steam engines had emerged as one of the leading designers.

He died at White-Hall, in Kenwyn, Truro on 16 October 1834, aged seventy-two.

James (1795-1862) was Williams second son. He continued his father's work on steam engines.
