      "Phineas Thomas (b. May 20, 1771, d. August 07, 1849)

Phineas Thomas (son of Phineas Thomas and Elizabeth) was born May 20, 1771 in PA, and died August 07, 1849 in Hancock Co., IN. He married Hannah McComas on June 30, 1798 in Probably in Fayette Co., KY, daughter of George McComas and Martha Taylor.

Includes NotesNotes for Phineas Thomas: Being researched by Cindy LeMaster of Walla Walla, WA, who writes:

'I am descended from Phineas Thomas, through his son Ephraim through his son David through his son Charles through his son William John through his daughter Emma Ellen through her daughter Crystal through her daughter Lois then to me--Cindy. . . .

His date of birth comes from "A Trace of Thomas," citing the Phineas Thomas family bible.

The place of his birth comes from the 1850 mortality schedule for Hancock Co., IN, according to that reference. It also says that he and his family came to KY at the age of 19, "being about the year 1784, and underwent the hardships of a Daniel Boone life."

He moved his family from Mason Co., KY to Clermont Co., OH by 1809, and then to Rush Co., IN in 1821 or 1822, where he was one of the original landowners.

He later moved to Hancock Co., IN, in 1836. No land records found there yet, through 1837.Terri Gorden, reference librarian in Hancock writes, "I have consulted the book: Early Landowners of Hancock County, Indiana: Part One -- Original Purchasers from USA; Part Two Early Land Owners 1828-1837.There is no mention of a Phineas Thomas."

His will is found in Hancock Co., IN WB A, p. 20.

From Sue __, Hancock Co., IN lookup volunteer ,ktscarlett5@home.com:
He and many of his descendants are buried in the Willow Branch cemetery, now known as the Pleasant Hill cemetery. His inscription says: "d. 7 Aug. 1849, 78y"

      Cemetery Description:
"The Willow Branch Cemetery, also known as Pleasant Hill, is in section thirty-six located about one-hundred yeards west of the town of Willow Branch's Main Street. It appears that the burials of Phineas Thomas' family members were the beginning of the cemetery in 1843.In 1857 Taylor W. Thomas, son of Phineas, conveyed the land for use as a burial ground.
There is no other information until 1 Mar 1924 when the Hancock County Commissioners requested a governing body for the cemetery. At that time Taylor B. Thomas was elected President; L.H. Sipe, Vice-President and John Spegal, Secretary-Treasurer.
Today, the cemetery grounds are well maintained and governed by board members, Dallas Marshall, President and Patsy R. Lewis, Secretary-Treasurer."
Also, this found in "The Pioneers of Madison and Hancock Counties, Indiana" "Phineas Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1765 and came to Hancock County in 1836, where he resided until his death in 1847; buried at Pleasant Hill or Willow Branch Cemetery. He was a pioneer of Rush County, Indiana also.
Children's names:Martha, Elizabeth, Margaret, Nancy, Alfred, John, David, Ephraim and Taylor W..He was 82 years of age at the time of his death."
He's one of those written up in "History of Hancock Co., IN," Greenfield, IN, 1882, p. 108.

An alternative account, also quite early, is "The Pioneer 1895 History and Genealogy of Madison and Hancock Counties, Indiana," by Samuel Hardin, reprinted in 1977.This reference says, "Phineas Thomas was born in Kentucky in 1765....he was 82 at the time of his death."

Yet another account says that he was born in Wales, and came to the colonies when he was a little boy.Since he and his father were both Phineas, perhaps this is a telescoping of the information, and Phineas Sr. is the one born in Wales.

Other early references to Phineas, all from "A Trace of Thomas," are in RK's MS Word document on him."
