Notes |
- The following notes are from David Martens:
Birth - 1870 Census - Johns Twp. Appanoose County, Iowa. He owned land in
Putnam Co. Indiana but was said to have come to Iowa in 1849. He bought 20
acres of land in Twp. 14, Putnam Co. April 2, 1847 (Book M. p. 364) from
Evan Moreland and wife Dorothy. John Moreland was a witness.
There is a William Morlan born 17 March 1821 in Putnam Co. Indiana in the
IGI/FHL. If this is true, then the notation in census records that he was
born in Tennessee is not correct. However, one would think he would know
where he was born and so it is likely that the person giving the info to the
IGI is incorrect. The IGI also gives information on Benjamin Morlan, son of
Silas. Ben was born 5 Jan 1844 in Parke Co. Indiana and was married in
Centerville, Iowa, but he died in Kansas in 1926. He may have been a nephew
of William Morlan.
Records for Putnam Co. Indiana show that there were marriages of other
Morlans in Putnam Co. Indiana. Elizabeth Morlan married Giles Stevens 7
Oct. 1847; Keziah Morlan married Hutcheson; Mathilda Morlan married Wright;
Louisa Morlan married Harris; Henry Morlan married Belinda Jones 11 Aug.
1836. These were probably brothers and sisters of William Morlan. His
estate was probated in record file #1054, but his name is spelled Moreland.
He died 30 March 1878 without a will. N.M. Jones is the administrator and
S. B. Jones is listed as a suretor. There are 300 acres of land listed.
His son-in-law, Allen A. Adams (who married the daughter Mary Morlan) is
listed as a representative.
- Find-A-Grave: "William Marion Morlan, son of William and Jane Morlan, was born on a farm in the northwest part of Appanoose County, October 20, 1851. His parents had permanently located here, having moved from Indiana. When Mr. Morlan grew to manhood he worked with his father on the farm until his marriage. . . "
