Ellis b. 11 July 1803 Louisville, Jefferson, KY, d. 8 Nov 1877 three months after her husband and was buried beside him in the Barnett Family Cemetery, Putnam, IN. Her father was John Ellis and her mother a Meriday. John and Rachel began their married life near Corydon, Harrison, IN where they lived until about 1828 with John’s older brother, David Barnett, when they all moved to Putnam County to be with their father who had moved there previously. John on 2 Mar 1828 bought land in Putnam County, 160 acres for $1.75 per acre. It is claimed that he lived on this same farm until his death. He added to his property until he owned 850 acres near Reelsville IN. Family records state that John Wesley Barnett’s father-in-law, John Ellis, walked to Harrison County IN with $900 in his belt. He had at least two sons in addition to his daughter Rachel. One son, Noah Ellis, had a daughter, Katie Ellis, who married Carl Carby; they had one daughter. The second son, Israel Ellis, had five children: john, Isaac, Dianna, Katie, and Rachel. . . ." [7] U.S. Census Washington, Putnam County, IN 1850: "John Barnett, age 50 b. Abt 1800 Kentucky, farmer real estate owned $2500, wife Rachel age 45 b. Abt. 1805 Pennsylvania; six children b. Indiana: William E. 20, Dian 18, John W. 16, Josephus 12, Eliza J. 10, James N. 7." U.S. Census Washington, Putnam County, IN 1860: "John Barnett, age 60 b. Abt. 1800 Kentucky, farmer real estate owned $6000 other property $2800, wife Rachel age 56 b. Abt. 1804 Pennsylvania; two children b. Indiana: Eliza J. 20, James W. 17 farm laborer; domestic, Mary Miner [Minor], 16 b. Abt. 1844 Indiana; son, Josephus Barnett, age 22 b. Abt. 1838 Indiana, wife Mahala J. [Friend], age 18 b. Abt. 1842 Indiana."
