- Ruth Lavina Whittington's father, Jacob Walker Whittington, died (6 Feb 1877) when Ruth was about six years old. Her mother, Martha June (Payne) Whittington married (21 Dec 1878) Thomas William Carter, with whom she had five more children. Ruth Lavina Whittington and her younger step-sister Alma Carter ("Aunt Alma" to Iva Deal and her family) and step-brother Charles Henry Carter (likewise, "Uncle Henry") remained especially close friends throughout their lives.
Roy Richard Thomas remembers meeting in 1932-1933 "Uncle Henry" who lived in the country outside Brazil, IN in a wood frame house off a dirt road, near a small creek. There was a pump for drinking water in the kitchen at one end of a metal sink. The sink had a sloping "draining board" made of wood. They used a coal-fired stove for cooking. Clothes were washed in very hot water in a copper tub over an open fire in the rear yard. A few chickens wandered outside the chicken coop. Nearby was a small rabbit hutch on stilts, waist high. Over in a far corner of the yard was the privy, a two-holer.
