- Killed when by accident a rifle fell from its mount on the bows of the covered wagon in which she
was riding discharged wounding her badly with infection setting in as they traveled until it eventually
caused her death. She left 5 little children to be cared for by her husband and her nearest relative
Elizabeth Vest her brothers wife cared for them along with four of her own as they continued their
journey. Another account says Isabell Vest Race sister of John Vest accidentally shot herself while
making the bed about two weeks after leaving Nebraska. She was buried on the plains.
