"From the Society for Japanese Irises (SJI):
The Payne Medal (named for W. Arlie Payne) is the highest award given by the American Iris Society that a Japanese iris can receive in its class. Payne Medal winners are then eligible to win the Dykes Medal, which is the highest award an iris can receive from The American Iris Society. Prior to 1992 the highest award a Japanese Iris could receive was the Payne Award. This award has now been elevated to a medal status." |

| The River Marne, 1918
http://www.worldwar1.com/
"The Second Battle of the Marne marked the turning of the tide in World War I. It began with the last German offensive of the conflict and was quickly followed by the first allied offensive victory of 1918. The American Expeditionary Force with over 250,000 men fighting under overall French command played key roles both in the initial defense and the later advances. In the Second Battle of Marne with 30,000 killed and wounded, the United States started suffering casualties on the enormous scale usually associated with the battles of the Great War." |

| The Washington Kantorei, Falls Church VA
The Washington Kantorei is one of the chamber groups whose performances Roy and Carol Thomas have enjoyed since Carol's retirement in 1999.
MEMORIES OF CAROL JEAN WEHRWEIN THOMAS BY DALE VOELKER (co-founder, Washington Kantorei)
Carol's and Roy's encouragement to the Washington Kantorei was very important to us, and their generosity motivated us to undertake new and higher things. I remember our German Embassy concerts with Carol and Roy sitting in the audience, supporting us, clapping for us, urging us to keep going.
MEMORIES OF CAROL JEAN WEHRWEIN THOMAS BY ROBERT PETILLO (co-founder, Washington Kantorei)
Though I didn't know Carol that well, I will always recall her sweet smile, and the happy sight of Carol and Roy together at concerts. What a love of music they shared. We certainly appreciated deeply all that Carol and Roy did in support of the Washington Kantorei. They played a major role in its continuing all those years. |
